1099 CRNA contracts: what to check before you sign

Independent contracts can pay well, but the details decide your real income and risk. Have a lawyer review any contract before you sign.

Rate and how it is calculated

Hourly, daily or per-case? Is there a minimum, and what happens when cases are cancelled? How are call, overtime and late finishes paid?

Who bills for your services

This is the clause most people skip. Either the facility or group bills and pays you a rate, or you (or your group) bill payers directly. If someone else bills Medicare for your work, you may need to reassign benefits to them, and you should know how your services are coded and what is collected.

Malpractice cover

Who provides it, what limits, and whether you need tail coverage when the contract ends.

Term, notice and non-competes

How either side can end the contract, and any restrictions on working for the facility or nearby facilities afterwards. Non-compete rules vary by state.

Payment terms

When you are paid, how disputes are handled, and whether payment depends on the facility being paid first.

Indemnity and insurance

Who is responsible if something goes wrong, and what insurance each side must carry.
