How commercial insurers pay CRNAs

Medicare pays a non-directed CRNA the full anesthesia rate. Commercial plans don't always follow suit.

What you might see

  • Some plans pay CRNAs the same rate as anesthesiologists for non-directed cases
  • Some pay a reduced percentage of the physician rate
  • Some only contract with the group, not individual CRNAs

Find out what you're paid

Look at your payments by payer and compare the amount per unit. If one plan pays much less, check your contract. It may say a reduced percentage, or it may be paying incorrectly.

Negotiate

Bring data: your volume, your quality, and how hard it would be for the plan's members to get care without you. See negotiating commercial rates.
