Billing anesthesia for hernia repair

The anesthesia code for a hernia repair depends on the type of hernia and where it is. Pick the wrong one and you leave units on the table.

The codes

CodeUsed forBase units
00830Hernia repairs in the lower abdomen, not otherwise specified4
00832Ventral and incisional hernias6

Base units shown are the standard values most payers use. Check your payer and the current year's CMS base unit file before relying on them.

Picking the right one

  • Open inguinal and other lower abdominal hernias: usually 00830.
  • Ventral and incisional hernias: 00832, which carries more base units.
  • Laparoscopic repairs: these enter the abdominal cavity, so the intraperitoneal codes for the upper or lower abdomen often apply. Check your payer's crosswalk.

Read the operative note

Schedules often say "hernia repair" without saying which kind. The operative note tells you. Code from it.
