For billing owners

Planning to retire from your billing business

If you're the business, retiring takes planning. Here are your options, and what tends to go well.

Your options

  • Sell outright and help with a handover for a few months.
  • Step back gradually, working fewer hours while a buyer takes on more of the work.
  • Hand it to an employee, if you have someone who wants it and can finance it.
  • Wind it down, helping each client find a new biller. Simple, but you get nothing for what you built.

Start earlier than you think

The best sales usually start a year or two before the owner wants to stop. That gives you time to tidy up contracts, document how you work and introduce clients to whoever comes next.

Think about your staff

If you have a small team, a buyer who keeps them on makes the handover easier for clients and for you. Ask every buyer what happens to your people.

If you bill for anesthesia

We're interested in talking to anesthesia billers about any of these paths. See sell your billing practice.

This is general information, not legal, tax or valuation advice. Talk to your own lawyer and accountant before you sell.

Our promise to sellers

How we'll treat you and your clients

  • We sign an NDA before you share client names or numbers.
  • Your clients hear about it from you and us together, after signing. Never before.
  • Every term, including how and when you're paid, is written out in plain English before you sign.
  • Your clients' fees don't go up for at least 12 months after the handover.
  • If you're selling only your anesthesia accounts, we won't approach your other clients. We'll put that in writing.
  • If we're not the right buyer, we'll tell you quickly and point you somewhere better if we can.
