Billing TRICARE for anesthesia

TRICARE covers military families and retirees. It mostly follows Medicare's anesthesia rules, with a few differences worth knowing.

How it works

TRICARE is run through regional contractors. Your claims go to the contractor for the region where care was given. TRICARE's anesthesia payment generally follows Medicare's methods.

CRNAs

CRNAs are recognized as TRICARE providers and can bill for their services. Enroll each provider with the regional contractor.

TRICARE For Life

Retirees with Medicare usually have TRICARE For Life as secondary coverage. Bill Medicare first. The claim then crosses over to TRICARE For Life.

Near a base?

If your facilities are near a military base, TRICARE may be a real share of your volume. Make sure enrollment is done before you need it.
