Billing anesthesia for urology procedures

Cystoscopies, TURPs and ureteroscopies are quick, common cases. Here's how the anesthesia codes break down.

Common codes

CodeUsed forBase units
00910Transurethral procedures, not otherwise specified (such as cystoscopy)3
00914Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)5
00918Ureteroscopy with stone fragmentation5

Base units shown are the standard values most payers use. Check your payer and the current year's CMS base unit file before relying on them.

Tips

  • Upgrade when the case changes. A cystoscopy that becomes a ureteroscopy with stone treatment should be coded as the bigger procedure.
  • Older patients. Many urology patients are older with other conditions. Capture physical status and, with payers that pay it, extreme age.
  • Short cases. As with any quick case, record exact times.
