Connecticut at a glance

What shapes anesthesia billing here

Connecticut hasn't opted out of Medicare's physician supervision requirement, so for Medicare purposes CRNAs here work under the supervision of the operating practitioner or an anesthesiologist. Supervision isn't the same as medical direction, though, and that distinction drives the billing. When an anesthesiologist medically directs a case, the CRNA bills with QX and the payment is split. When nobody is medically directing, even with a surgeon supervising, the CRNA's service is billed with QZ.

Groups in Connecticut often run a mix of both on the same day, which is exactly where modifier mistakes happen. State law and facility bylaws can add their own rules on top of Medicare's, so the billing has to follow what actually happened in each case.

  • Medicare supervision: not opted out, so physician supervision applies for Medicare
  • Medicare Part B contractor: NGS (Jurisdiction K)
  • Medicaid program: HUSKY Health (Connecticut Medicaid)
  • Employed CRNAs: about 480 (BLS, May 2025), not counting self-employed and 1099 CRNAs
  • Average CRNA pay: $225,810 a year for employed CRNAs (BLS, May 2025)

How we help Connecticut groups

Everything between the anesthesia record and your account

Medicare and HUSKY Health

Claims built for NGS and HUSKY Health, with the modifiers that match how each case was staffed and time reported the way each payer wants it.

Commercial payers

Your contracts loaded so every payment is checked, including rules for time units, physical status and qualifying circumstances.

Care-team practices

Medical direction documented and billed correctly, so the anesthesiologist and CRNA claims match and neither side is short-paid. See the seven medical direction requirements.

Enrollment and credentialing

New providers enrolled with NGS, HUSKY Health and commercial plans, with revalidation dates tracked so nothing lapses.
