Reassignment of benefits: how Medicare pays your group instead of you

If you work for a group or facility that bills Medicare for your services, you'll usually need to reassign your benefits.

What it is

Reassignment lets a group or facility bill Medicare for your services and receive the payment, instead of you. It's done through Medicare enrollment, using the reassignment form or the online enrollment system.

When you need it

  • You're a member or employee of a CRNA group that bills for you
  • A facility or anesthesia group bills for your work under a contract

What to check first

Once you reassign, the group bills under your number. You can usually ask to see what's billed under your NPI. Make sure your contract says how you're paid and that you can review those claims.

Ending it

When you leave, end the reassignment so claims aren't billed under your name for work you didn't do.
