Billing the VA Community Care Network for anesthesia

When veterans get surgery outside a VA hospital, the anesthesia can be paid through the VA's Community Care Network. The referral is everything.

How it works

The VA pays for some care in the community through its Community Care Network, managed by third-party administrators. To get paid, your group generally needs to be in the network, and the care needs a VA referral.

The referral number

Most VA community care claims need the referral or authorization number for the episode of care. Get it from the facility or surgeon's office before the case. Claims without it usually deny.

Join the network

If your facilities treat veterans through community care, ask the network's administrator in your region how to join.

Follow up

Track VA claims separately. They tend to need more follow-up than commercial claims.
