Payer mix: why it shapes your whole business

Two groups doing the same cases can earn very different amounts, just because of who's paying.

What it is

The share of your cases, or your units, paid by each type of payer: commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, self-pay and others.

Why it matters

Commercial plans usually pay much more per unit than Medicare, and Medicare usually pays more than Medicaid. A shift of a few points in your mix can change your revenue noticeably.

How to use it

  • Track mix by facility
  • Use it to decide which new facilities to take on
  • Use it to support a stipend request when a facility's mix doesn't cover your costs
