How to read an A/R aging report

The aging report shows what you're owed and how long it's been owed. It's the fastest way to see if your billing is healthy.

The buckets

Unpaid claims are grouped by age, usually 0 to 30 days, 31 to 60, 61 to 90, 91 to 120 and over 120.

What to look for

  • How much is over 90 days. The older a claim, the less likely it gets paid. A growing over-90 bucket is a warning sign.
  • Which payers are slow. Sort by payer.
  • Patient balances vs insurance. They need different follow-up.

What to ask your biller

For each old claim: why is it unpaid, what's been done, and what's next? If they can't tell you, that's your answer. See also days in A/R.
