Choosing a biller

How to choose an anesthesia billing company

You're handing someone your income. Here are the questions we'd ask if we were in your seat.

Start with anesthesia experience

Ask how many anesthesia groups they bill for today, and how many are CRNA-led. Anesthesia has its own units, modifiers and payer rules. A company that mostly bills primary care will learn on your claims.

Twelve questions to ask

  1. How many anesthesia groups do you bill for, and can we speak to two of them?
  2. Who will actually work our account, and how long have they billed anesthesia?
  3. What will you report to us each month?
  4. What's your typical net collection rate and days to payment for groups like ours?
  5. How do you handle denials, and how fast?
  6. Do you work old unpaid claims when we switch, or only new ones?
  7. How do you price, and is anything charged on top of the percentage?
  8. Do payments go straight into our bank account?
  9. Do you handle credentialing and enrollment?
  10. How long is the contract and how much notice do we give to leave?
  11. Who owns our data, and what happens to it if we leave?
  12. Do you use offshore staff or software, and how is patient data protected?

Listen for specifics

Good answers come with numbers and names. If you hear "we're very thorough" but no reporting sample, keep looking.
