Choosing a biller

In-house or outsourced anesthesia billing?

Both can work. The right answer depends on your size, your payers and how much admin you want to own.

When in-house makes sense

Larger groups with steady volume sometimes prefer their own billing team. You get direct control and someone down the hall. You also take on hiring, training, software, compliance and cover for holidays and sick days.

When outsourcing makes sense

Most independent groups outsource. You pay a percentage of collections, so cost moves with income, and you don't depend on one person. The trade-off is that you need a partner who reports clearly and answers quickly.

Questions to settle it

  • If your biller left tomorrow, how long would claims stop?
  • Who keeps up with payer rule changes today?
  • What does billing really cost you, including software and your own time?
  • Can you see your numbers every month without asking?

If those answers make you uneasy, outsourcing to an anesthesia specialist is usually the safer choice.
