Malpractice insurance when you go independent

When you leave a hospital job, its insurance usually stops covering you. Here's what to sort out before your first case.

Two kinds of policy

  • Occurrence: covers anything that happened while the policy was active, even if the claim comes years later.
  • Claims-made: covers claims made while the policy is active. When it ends, you may need "tail" coverage for claims that come later.

Leaving a job

If your old employer had a claims-made policy, ask who pays for tail coverage. It's often negotiable.

What facilities will ask for

Surgery centers and offices usually require certain coverage limits and proof of insurance before you start. Ask early.

Group policies

If you're building a group, a group policy can be simpler and cheaper than individual ones. Talk to a broker who works with anesthesia providers.
