How to price your anesthesia services to a surgery center

Most of your income comes from billing payers. But some centers need more than billing alone can cover, and that's where pricing comes in.

The common models

  • Billing only. You bill payers and keep the collections. The center pays nothing.
  • Billing plus a stipend. The center pays a top-up when collections don't cover your costs.
  • Per-day or per-hour rate. The center pays you directly and may bill for anesthesia itself.

Work out what you need

  1. Estimate cases per day and units per case
  2. Apply the center's payer mix to get expected collections
  3. Compare with what it costs you to staff the room, including your pay, insurance and billing
  4. The gap, if any, is what you ask the center to cover

Be careful with arrangements

Payments between anesthesia groups and facilities can raise legal issues. Have a healthcare lawyer review any deal.
