The buckets
Unpaid claims are grouped by age, usually 0 to 30 days, 31 to 60, 61 to 90, 91 to 120 and over 120.
What to look for
- How much is over 90 days. The older a claim, the less likely it gets paid. A growing over-90 bucket is a warning sign.
- Which payers are slow. Sort by payer.
- Patient balances vs insurance. They need different follow-up.
What to ask your biller
For each old claim: why is it unpaid, what's been done, and what's next? If they can't tell you, that's your answer. See also days in A/R.
